According to Statistics Canada’s Labour Market Information report for April, Thunder Bay is in the top 5 for best labour market conditions and top 6 for lowest unemployment rate. This is great news for the city! Check out the full report from Daily Commercial News.

Canada Census 2011: Windsor, Thunder Bay Only Major Cities To Shrink As Automaking, Forestry Suffer
The first findings from the 2011 Census have been released, providing information on population and dwelling. Unfortunately, things are looking bleak for Thunder Bay. As the Huffington Post reports, Thunder Bay and Windsor are the only two major urban centres in Canada who have experienced a drop in population since the last Census (2006). August 2011 Labour Market Monitor – Employment on the Rise in NWO
The August 2011 edition of Northwest Ontario’s Labour Market Monitor has been released from Service Canada. This month’s focus finds employment in NWO on the rise:
Employment in the Northwest Ontario economic region increased by 2,400 from August 2010 to August 2011 following 12 consecutive months of year-over-year declines. All job gains were in full-time employment (+4,500), reduced by part-time employment losses (-2,200). During this period, more people looked for work leading to an increase in the size of the labour force. The number of unemployed people fell by 1,000, causing the unemployment rate to decline from 8.1% in August 2010 to 7.0% in August 2011. Over the same period, the provincial unemployment rate declined from 9.1% to 8.1%.

Focus on Tourism
July’s Workforce Focus bulletin focuses on Tourism on a national level as well as within the District of Thunder Bay. Excerpt from this report: “The tourism industry is facing a potentially severe labour shortage over the next 15 years. The Baby Boomer generation, which makes up 30% of the labour force, is beginning to reach the age of retirement. This will create job opportunities across all sectors of the tourism industry. The occupations listed above are anticipated to be in high demand as labour shortages increase. While education varies among these occupations, the top 5 skills required to succeed include: strong oral communication, problem solving, computer use, money math and numerical estimation.”
