Mining Sector Continues to Move Forward

According to the December 2010 Northwest Labour Market Monitor, mining is moving forward in our area:
- Stillwater Mining Company acquired property outside of Marathon to begin a new copper and paladium mine
- Manitou Gold Inc. announced favourable test results of gold in the Upper Manitou Lake area of the Kenora Mining Division
- Noront Resources Ltd. secured $10 mil in equity financing to continue development in the Ring of Fire area

Mine Restarts Northwest of Thunder Bay – 200 workers Called Back

According to the October edition of the Labour Market Monitor for Northwestern Ontario, the North American Palladium mine northwest of Thunder Bay has been restarted in October. Approximately 200 workers have been recalled at the Lac des Iles mine and with a new shaft being constructed that will reach a new ore body below the existing pit, the expectation is that the mine will be open for at least the next 10 years. Highway Construction Plans Lead to Big Employment Boost

According to the September edition of Northwest Ontario Labour Market Monitor (Available here), several highway construction projects funded through the “Open Ontario” plan are set to begin shortly throughout Northwestern Ontario. A 14km section between Thunder Bay and Nipigon will create 400 jobs; a second expansion project between Thunder Bay and Nipigon will create 300 jobs; and a section of Highway 11 east of Longlac expects to create 40 positions. Good news for our labour force!
